ChatGPT’s “Study Together” is Turning AI Into a True Study Buddy

ChatGPT’s new Study Together mode guides you with questions - more like a tutor than a chatbot.

OpenAI is quietly rolling out a new ChatGPT feature called “Study Together” – and it could revolutionise the way we learn with AI.

Instead of simply answering your questions, Study Together nudges you to think through problems yourself. Early users describe it as being more like a tutor: the chatbot asks questions, tests your understanding, and encourages you to respond – a shift from passive answers to active learning .

The feature appears under ChatGPT’s Tools dropdown and is showing up for a small group of users, including both free and ChatGPT Plus subscribers. There’s speculation it might later support collaborative study rooms, allowing multiple users to learn together, though that’s still a possibility under discussion.

This timing is significant. As ChatGPT has become a popular tool for homework- and sometimes a shortcut -OpenAI seems to be shifting toward encouraging deeper engagement and preventing misuse.

However, many questions remain unanswered. OpenAI hasn’t confirmed which users get access, how the feature works in detail, or whether it’s linked to GPT‑5 – expected later this summer. For now, it’s a beta test quietly unfolding in the background.

If this rolls out widely, Study Together could spark a new era of AI‑powered education – one where active learning, personalised pacing, and even group study sessions become built into ChatGPT, fostering deeper understanding instead of quick answers.
